Biography

As appropriately dubbed by a fan, this "jazz kitten" has purred on stages from Toronto to Paris. Engaging and magnetic, Kira sings classic jazz tunes with style and swing. From sultry and moody to whimsical and tender, she uses the music to tell stories, share secrets or just take the listener along for a ride.

After nearly five happy and intense years dedicating herself to the harmony project SWING ROSIE, Kira is making more musical time for solo projects. Look for a new Kira Callahan CD in 2007 entitled The Real Thing Begins. This will be a wonderfully intimate recording with guitar and voice featuring the talented young guitarist Nathan Hiltz.

You can find Kira lighting up the stage during the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival and year 'round at jazz hotspots including: The REX HOTEL, The Liberty Café, The Montreal Bistro, The Distillery District and the Carlu to name a few.

Recording History:
Kira has had a great time performing concerts at The Cameron House which inspired her very first CD Kira Callahan Live at the Cameron House. The album features Adrean Farrugia on keys, Jim Vivian on bass, and William Carn on trombone.

In Autumn of 2003, Kira recorded her CD Kira Callahan Live at Glenn Gould Studio. Currently playing on JAZZ FM 91.1 and CIUT89.5, this trio project features Adrean Farrugia on piano and Marc Rogers on Bass.

Besides her solo adventures, in 2003 Kira founded SWING ROSIE, the popular Andrews Sisters Trio made up of Kira Callahan, Shannon Butcher and Chantelle Wilson. In the past four years they have performed hundreds of club dates, made several TV appearances and have thrilled jazz festival audiences around the province. Their 2005 debut CD Sing Cool, Swing Hot hit #1 on several Canadian Jazz stations and continues to receive steady airplay.

Some earlier notes: Toronto native Kira Callahan has been singing since the age of nine. Fronting pop cover bands in clubs, bars and private events took Kira through her teens and early 20's to the doors of the renowned Humber College Jazz Program. For the next three years, she immersed herself in full-time music study and there discovered her passion for jazz. Life’s winding road took her away from music for a decade during which she was a professional videographer for eight years, studied acting and finally made it back to music - her first love - in 1999.

In addition to playing jazz clubs around town, Kira also performs with some of the best players in the country at a wide range of private and corporate events. If you are interested in a booking, please visit the Contact page.
